Wales Sport (Wales Times) July 29, 2026 – Para-athlete Aled Davies produced a personal best throw of 48.38m to win the men’s F42-44/F61-64 discus final and secure Wales’ second Commonwealth Games gold medal at Glasgow 2026.

As reported by BBC Sport, Davies, competing in the F42 classification, saw other athletes record longer raw distances, but the multi-class scoring system used in combined F42-44/F61-64 events awarded him the gold on points. His fellow Welsh competitor, Harrison Walsh, finished fifth in the same final.

The victory marked Davies’ second Commonwealth Games gold, following his 2022 triumph in Birmingham, and added to his silver from the same venue in Glasgow in 2014.

In the women’s F42-44/F61-64 discus on the same day, Welsh athletes Funso Oduwole and Olivia Breen took silver and bronze respectively, completing a three-medal haul for Welsh para-athletes in the session.

How did Aled Davies prepare for Glasgow 2026?

Ahead of the Games, Davies told BBC Sport he had “opened Pandora’s Box” in his throwing career after changing his training group and coach following a silver medal in shot put at the Paris 2024 Paralympics.

He said:

“That has transformed everything for me; it restored my confidence. The new training group is invigorating and has reignited my ambition.”

Davies, who holds world records in F42 shot put and discus, described the discus event in Glasgow as “like a hobby”, with no para shot put on the programme and his long-term focus now on the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympics.

He added: “My primary focus is now shot put, rather than discus… I’m significantly older now, and I believe there’s a realistic chance this might be my last competition. I certainly think this will be my final outing in discus.”

What was the context of Wales’ medal success in Glasgow?

Team Wales’ first gold in Glasgow 2026 came a day earlier when 19-year-old gymnast Ruby Evans won the women’s floor exercise final with a score of 13.500, ahead of England’s Abigail Martin and Shantae-Eve Amankwaah.

As reported by WalesOnline, Evans described using frustration from earlier setbacks in the all-around and beam finals as motivation, saying:

“I feel like a bit of fire in me… It’s like a different feeling.”

By the time Davies won on 29 July, Team Wales had amassed multiple medals across gymnastics, swimming and para athletics, including earlier bronzes from the Roper twins in artistic gymnastics and bronze medals in the pool and bowls.

How did the discus final unfold?

The men’s F42-44/F61-64 discus final was held at Scotstoun Stadium as part of the largest integrated para athletics programme in Commonwealth Games history, with 16 para events scheduled across the week.

Davies, returning to the city where he won silver in 2014, faced a field including Birmingham 2022 bronze medallist Harrison Walsh and other international throwers.

Under the combined-class scoring system, Davies’ 48.38m personal best converted to the highest points total, overtaking athletes with longer raw throws in other classifications.

What did officials and teammates say?

Team Wales’ performance in Glasgow has been overseen by chair Gareth Davies, who said in June:

“Announcing the team is always a proud moment, not just for the athletes, but for everyone who has supported them on the journey.”

Para-athletics coverage by ParalympicsGB highlighted Davies as one of its most successful athletes, with three Paralympic golds, a silver and a bronze across four Games.

Background of the development

Aled Davies first emerged as a Commonwealth Games medallist in Glasgow in 2014, when he won silver in the F42-44 discus at the age of 23. He later became the youngest Team Wales captain in history.

At the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, he won gold in the same discus event, defending his status as one of Wales’ leading para-athletes.

Between those Games, he built a Paralympic record that includes golds in London 2012, Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020, plus world titles across shot put and discus.

Glasgow 2026 features a record 47 para sport medal events, with para athletics fully integrated into the main programme for the first time since Manchester 2002.

Prediction: How this development can affect Welsh para-athletes and supporters

Aled Davies’ gold in Glasgow 2026 is likely to strengthen the profile of para athletics within Wales and reinforce the pathway from Disability Sport Wales to Commonwealth and Paralympic success.

For emerging Welsh para-athletes, seeing a multi‑Paralympic champion return to the same venue to win again can validate long-term training plans and encourage investment in classification-specific coaching and facilities.

For Welsh uk/sports/">sports fans and local communities, the combination of Evans’ gymnastics gold and Davies’ discus gold on consecutive days may increase engagement with both para and non-para sports, potentially boosting participation and attendance at domestic events.

In the longer term, if Davies channels this momentum into his stated goal of a shot put gold at Los Angeles 2028, Welsh para-throwing could benefit from heightened media attention, sponsorship interest and talent identification focus.
