As reported by OnTheWight, this coming weekend (22nd and 23rd August 2026) Quay Arts will be inviting the whole community to join its free 50th Birthday Weekend and help celebrate the significant milestone. The building will come alive with two days of performances and activities taking place across the venue from midday until late, with the full timetable of events available on the Quay Arts website.

A packed programme across two days

The programme features a wide array of musical acts, including Sea Gels Shanty Band, Rufus Reader Trio, Berlingo Flick, Kindred Found, Rehab Ramons, Audio Ghosts, Proud Mary, East Cowes Shanty Band, Wight Harmony, Angelina and JC Grimshaw, Outa Time and The Ohmz. They will be joined by a host of local performers, community groups and artists.

The weekend will also include brass bands, choirs, folk music, dance, comedy, magic, circus and spoken word. Ballyrags will bring comedy workshops and comedy clubs across the weekend, alongside performances from Jaydene Lee, Huxley Magic and many more.

Something for the family

There will also be plenty for families, including Wild Woods Circus workshops, children’s activities and storytelling. The Clayden Gallery will become ‘The Summer Studio’, a free creative space running throughout the rest of the summer, with painting, drawing, cardboard building and more. Spoken word performances will also take place throughout the weekend in the Green Room.

The Birthday Weekend is intended as a chance for audiences old and new to explore Quay Arts, discover something unexpected and celebrate the organisation’s remarkable history and the creative community that continues to shape it today.

Fifty years in the telling

The Centre Exhibition, running in the West Gallery until Sunday 13th September, offers a unique opportunity to explore the story of Quay Arts through a rich timeline of artworks, archive material and personal voices from those who have shaped the organisation over the past fifty years.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, Quay Arts is also inviting the public to share their own memories and stories connected to the venue. Whether it is a favourite exhibition, memorable performance, workshop or personal moment experienced at Quay Arts, every story helps celebrate the impact the organisation has had across generations. Visitors are encouraged to take headphones or ear buds along and enjoy a guided audio tour of the exhibition with members of the arts team.

“Help us capture the legacy of this remarkable creative hub”

Del Seymour, Centre Manager, said:

“Turning 50 is a milestone we’re proud to celebrate with a vibrant birthday weekend of music, theatre, comedy, poetry, circus, dance and more and an exhibition that reflects the spirit of Quay Arts.
“We’re calling on everyone who’s been part of our journey to share their memories and help us capture the legacy of this remarkable creative hub.”

Quay Arts looks forward to welcoming audiences old and new to celebrate this landmark anniversary and honour the creativity and community spirit that continue to define the organisation today.

Event details

The Quay Arts 50th Birthday Weekend takes place on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd August 2026 at Quay Arts, Sea Street, Newport Harbour PO30 5BD. Entry is free and events run from midday to late. For the full programme and latest information, visit the Quay Arts website.

Background of the development

Quay Arts is a long-established arts centre based at Newport Harbour on the Isle of Wight, operating across a complex of galleries, studios and performance spaces. Over its five decades it has served as a hub for the island’s creative community, hosting exhibitions, live music, theatre, comedy and educational workshops. The 50th anniversary celebrations reflect both the venue’s history and its ongoing role in supporting local artists and community groups.

The anniversary is marked through two linked strands: the free Birthday Weekend of live performances and activities, and the Centre Exhibition, which draws on archive material and personal accounts to chart the organisation’s evolution. The public call for memories is designed to build a lasting record of the venue’s impact across generations. The event feature was sponsored by Quay Arts, which, as OnTheWight noted, enables the publication to continue providing free coverage.

Prediction: what this means for the local community

For the Isle of Wight’s residents, artists and visitors, the Quay Arts 50th birthday weekend is likely to serve as both a celebration and a gateway. By making the event free and running it from midday to late, the venue lowers barriers to entry, potentially drawing in first-time audiences who may not have visited before. This could broaden the centre’s reach beyond its established regulars.

For local performers and community groups, the weekend offers rare exposure on a shared stage alongside established acts, which may strengthen networks and lead to future collaborations. The ‘Summer Studio’ and the Centre Exhibition, running into September, could sustain visitor interest beyond the weekend itself. The memory-sharing appeal may also help secure the organisation’s legacy, encouraging a sense of ownership among the community that could translate into continued support, volunteering and attendance in the years ahead.
