Causes of the Catastrophic Floods in the Himalayas
The main reason behind this destruction is human activities. We become so excited by the tourists that we start harming the spirit of the place. Why do we need a 5-star hotel out there? The biggest joy is residing in the captivating company of the Himalayas! No greater luxury than watching the 75mm view of the snow peaks! They settle in the eyes for life. Then why do things that irritate them?

- Road Expansion and Tunneling: Careless hill-cutting and blasting for highways fragment local ecosystems, generate loose debris, and block natural water channels.
- Climate-Induced Greenhouse Emissions: Human activities driving global warming accelerate glacial melting in the “Third Pole,” swelling river basins and triggering severe downstream floods. Fossil fuels release greenhouse gases that heat the atmosphere.

As global interest in high-altitude mountaineering surged, thousands of climbers, trekkers, and support staff flocked to the region, transforming the landscape into what many environmentalists call the “world’s highest garbage dump. Though waste management policies and cleanup efforts have been made. Still, it requires a lot of work.
- Hydropower and Dam Construction: Indiscriminate river damming alters natural flow dynamics, increases sedimentation, and raises the catastrophic risk of structural failures and downstream flooding.
