As reported by Swansea City’s official website, Matos said Key remains on a rehabilitation programme following a hamstring injury, while Eustaquio is managing a shoulder problem sustained while on international duty with Canada. The Swansea head coach confirmed that Eustaquio will miss the Norwich game but indicated that the midfielder’s longer-term outlook is currently positive.

“Josh is still on the rehab plan, and Stephen, as everyone knows, had a situation with his shoulder,” Matos said, as quoted by Swansea City’s official website.

“He will not be available for tomorrow, but let’s see for the further matches. At the moment, the picture looks okay. But let’s go step by step,” he added.

Why Are Josh Key and Stephen Eustaquio Missing?

Key has been absent since suffering a hamstring injury during Swansea’s match against Burnley. As reported by BBC Sport, the defender came off at half-time in that fixture and was subsequently expected to miss several matches.

The 26-year-old did not travel with the squad for Swansea’s previous Championship match, a 2-1 comeback victory at Lincoln City. Swansea City’s official club update confirms that Key missed that trip because of the hamstring injury and remains on his rehabilitation plan.

Eustaquio’s absence is more recent. The Canadian midfielder featured for his country during the international window, playing against Chile, Peru and the USA, before returning to Swansea with a shoulder complaint.

As reported by Yahoo Sport, Eustaquio was withdrawn at half-time during Canada’s match against the USA after reportedly hearing a “crack” in his shoulder. Canada head coach Jesse Marsch said at the time that the midfielder had been sent for an X-ray, with concern over a possible clavicle injury.

Subsequent reporting indicated that the injury was not believed to be serious, although Eustaquio still required assessment after returning to Swansea. Matos has now confirmed that he will not be involved against Norwich, while adding that the broader picture around the injury “looks okay”.

What Did Vitor Matos Say About the Squad?

Matos also provided an update on the wider Swansea squad ahead of the visit of Norwich City. He said that other players were “looking good”, although he acknowledged that several members of the group had returned from international duty after long journeys and required assessment.

“Everyone else is looking good. Players are arriving back step by step,” Matos said, according to Swansea City’s official website.

“A lot of them have had game time and long travels, so at the moment we’re assessing everyone, seeing how everyone is, and then getting ready for the game,” he added.

The Swansea head coach also confirmed a positive update regarding striker Ross Stewart. The Scotland international is available for selection after recovering from a long-term quad injury.

How Will Swansea Replace Josh Key?

Key’s continued absence leaves Vitor Matos with a familiar selection issue at right-back. As reported by BBC Sport, Key is the only out-and-out right-back in Swansea’s senior squad, and his injury had already forced the club to adapt during the victory at Lincoln City.

Academy product Filip Lissah started at right-back in that match. BBC Sport reported that the 21-year-old, who grew up as a central defender, produced a solid performance on the right flank and was booked during the game.

Matos praised Lissah’s contribution following the Lincoln victory, saying: “We all know how important Keysey is for us. We have Fil who played a massive game today, but we understand that all we can do now is help Keysey to recover and then adjust the team in terms of our idea and keep moving forward.”

Swansea City News also reported that Lissah is the only recognised senior right-back option while Key is unavailable, with Stephen Welsh another possible defensive alternative.

Who Could Replace Stephen Eustaquio?

Eustaquio’s unavailability removes a midfield option for Matos ahead of a demanding run of fixtures. The Canadian joined Swansea in the summer and had made six league appearances before the international break, scoring his first Swansea goal in the 2-1 win over Lincoln City.

Preview coverage from The Hard Tackle identified Jay Fulton and Gonçalo Franco as the leading candidates to replace Eustaquio in midfield. The outlet suggested that Franco could provide defensive balance and allow Swansea’s full-backs to advance.

Sports Mole similarly reported that Fulton or Franco were likely alternatives, although its preview had anticipated that Key, Cameron Burgess and Ross Stewart would all remain unavailable. Swansea’s official update has since confirmed Stewart’s availability.

When Is Swansea City vs Norwich City?

Swansea City host Norwich City in the Championship on Saturday, 10 October, with kick-off scheduled for 12:30pm at the Swansea.com Stadium.

The fixture is Swansea’s first league match after the international break. BBC Sport reported that Swansea had been left with a reduced senior squad during the window because of international call-ups, while Key, Stewart and Cameron Burgess were also in the treatment room at various stages.

Swansea entered the international break top of the Championship after losing only one of their opening eight league matches. The club’s official website lists the Norwich fixture as a 12:30pm kick-off on Saturday.

What Is the Wider Injury Picture?

Swansea’s official announcement specifically rules out Key and Eustaquio for Norwich, while confirming Stewart’s return. Cameron Burgess has also been mentioned in recent reporting as an absentee, with BBC Sport previously describing the Australian defender as a long-term injury concern.

FotMob’s match listing listed Eustaquio, Stewart, Key and Burgess as unavailable for Swansea, while Norwich were listed without Mohamed Touré, Gabriel Forsyth, Lucien Mahovo, Ali Ahmed and Mirko Topić.

Sports Mole reported that Norwich forward Mohamed Touré has been ruled out in the long term with a shoulder injury, with Jovon Makama or Ante Crnac potential attacking alternatives.

Background of the Development

Josh Key’s injury was first confirmed after Swansea’s win over Burnley, when Matos said the defender would be out “for a little bit” and indicated that the club would announce a timescale. BBC Sport reported that Key could face a significant lay-off.

Key subsequently missed Swansea’s 2-1 comeback victory at Lincoln City, in which Lissah started at right-back. Swansea City News reported that Lissah provided the assist for Eustaquio’s decisive goal in that match.

Eustaquio’s shoulder issue emerged during Canada’s international schedule. Yahoo Sport reported that Marsch said the midfielder felt a crack in his shoulder and was sent to hospital for an X-ray, raising initial concern over a possible broken clavicle. Later reporting suggested the injury was not believed to be serious, and Matos has now described the overall picture as okay, while confirming Eustaquio will miss the Norwich match.

Prediction: How Could This Affect Swansea City?

For Swansea supporters, the immediate effect is likely to be a reshaped starting XI against Norwich. Key’s absence continues to limit Matos’s specialist right-back options, meaning Lissah may again be required to fill the role despite being naturally a centre-back.

Eustaquio’s absence could also alter Swansea’s midfield balance. With the Canadian unavailable, Fulton or Franco may be asked to step in, with preview coverage suggesting Franco could be used to provide defensive stability.

The return of Stewart gives Matos an additional attacking option after a long-term quad injury, although Swansea’s official update does not state whether he will start. With Swansea facing a congested schedule after the international break, the club’s ability to manage Key’s rehabilitation and Eustaquio’s shoulder recovery could influence squad rotation over the coming weeks.
