As reported by the BBC, Ms Williams will take on the senior cathedral role at a time when the institution continues to respond to concerns identified in independent reviews. The corporation’s headline stated that the new dean will “continue to address concerns” at what it described as a “scandal-hit cathedral”.

The appointment also includes leadership of the Bro Deiniol Ministry Area. Premier Christian News reported that Ms Williams has been appointed Dean of Bangor Cathedral as the cathedral works to address safeguarding concerns and rebuild trust following the controversy.

The Bangor Aye similarly reported that the Revd Nia Catrin Williams has been appointed Dean of Bangor Cathedral and Ministry Area Leader of Bro Deiniol.

Who Is Nia Catrin Williams?

Ms Williams is an experienced Church in Wales priest who has served in the Diocese of Bangor. The Church in Wales lists a “Reverend N C Williams” as Ministry Area Leader at St Aelhaearn, Upper Llanaelhaearn.

The Church in Wales job advertisement for the Dean of Bangor Cathedral and Ministry Area Leader of Bro Deiniol said the successful candidate would need to be an experienced priest, with at least six years in priest’s orders, and a fluent communicator in Welsh and English. It also required strong pastoral and managerial abilities, experience of a large parish, church, cathedral or significant ecclesiastical role, and a commitment to a transparent and welcoming culture.

The advertisement stated that the appointment was subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check and the Church in Wales’s safeguarding procedures.

Why Is Bangor Cathedral Appointing a New Dean?

The vacancy arose because Dr Manon Ceridwen James, who became Dean of Bangor Cathedral in 2025, was elected Bishop of Bangor in June 2026. The Church in Wales said she was elected as the 82nd Bishop of Bangor at Holy Trinity Church, Llandudno, during a meeting of the Electoral College on June 16.

Dr James was later consecrated as the first woman to hold the office of Bishop of Bangor. Premier Christian News reported that she was consecrated in Newport in September 2026 and installed at St Deiniol’s Cathedral, Bangor, on September 19.

Her move to the bishopric left the cathedral deanery vacant. The Church in Wales advertised the combined role of Dean of Bangor Cathedral and Ministry Area Leader of Bro Deiniol on September 1, with applications closing at noon on September 21 and interviews scheduled for October 5.

What Concerns Has the Cathedral Faced?

The appointment follows a period of significant institutional scrutiny. In October 2024, the then Archbishop of Wales, the Most Revd Andrew John, commissioned a visitation of Bangor Cathedral and an independent safeguarding review by Thirtyone:eight, an organisation specialising in safeguarding advice in church settings.

The Church in Wales said the reports identified concerns and set out necessary improvements, adding that the cathedral needed to become “truly safe, inclusive, well-governed and thriving”.

In response, the Church in Wales established two bodies: an Implementation Group, chaired by Archdeacon David Parry, to carry out the recommendations in full; and an Oversight Board, chaired by Prof Medwin Hughes, to scrutinise that work and support the Dean of Bangor.

The BBC reported in May 2025 that six serious incident referrals connected with Bangor Cathedral had been made to the Charity Commission in just over a year. It said four related to safeguarding and two to financial matters.

The broadcaster also reported allegations concerning expenditure, including claims that £418,000 had been spent on new cathedral furniture and that about £20,000 had been spent on three overseas trips. The cathedral acknowledged inadequate consultation and information around furniture expenditure, while saying money for the trips came from diocesan rather than cathedral funds. It also said the dean and chapter had agreed to repay funds spent by the diocese that should have been paid by the cathedral.

The BBC further reported that report summaries published by the Church in Wales described complaints about a culture in which “sexual boundaries seemed blurred”. It said the Church in Wales created an implementation group to carry out the reports’ recommendations and an oversight board to scrutinise its work.

What Did Dr Manon James Do as Dean?

Dr James was appointed Dean of Bangor Cathedral in 2025 and installed on October 11 that year. The Episcopal News Service, citing the Church in Wales, reported that she took up the post after a period of financial pressure, governance issues and public scrutiny, with a remit to lead recovery, restore trust and support reconciliation and healing.

Ahead of her installation, Dr James said:

“I am honored to take up the role of dean at Bangor Cathedral and to lead the cathedral through a period of healing and reconciliation.”

She added that her priority was to restore confidence in the cathedral’s mission and ministry.

The Church in Wales Oversight Board later recorded that, at its meeting on November 3, 2025, it was pleased to hear that a sense of stability was returning to the cathedral and that the Dean was working to ensure a positive tone in written materials and personal interactions. It also noted that challenges remained, including ongoing and complex human resources-related cases.

What Will the New Dean Be Expected to Do?

The Church in Wales job specification set out a broad leadership mandate. It said the new Dean would lead worship, witness, mission and ministry across the cathedral and ministry area, develop a diverse team of lay and ordained staff and volunteers, and embed a positive, transparent and welcoming culture.

The role also includes developing the cathedral’s choral and bilingual worship, deepening ministry to pilgrims and seekers on the North Wales Pilgrim’s Way, improving financial stability and processes, addressing improvements to the cathedral’s fabric, and building partnerships with institutions and organisations in Bangor.

The advertisement described the position as an opportunity to “shape the next chapter in the life of the cathedral and ministry area” and to play an important part in the leadership of the diocese.

Background of the Development

Bangor Cathedral, also known as St Deiniol’s Cathedral, is the mother church of the Diocese of Bangor. Its recent difficulties began to attract sustained public attention after the 2024 visitation and safeguarding review were commissioned in response to concerns brought to the Archbishop of Wales.

The reviews led to recommendations including the urgent appointment of a new dean. The Church in Wales said the recruitment process began with a consultation involving congregation members, which identified requirements including Welsh fluency, pastoral skills, spiritual maturity, and governance and management experience.

Dr James was appointed to lead the cathedral through that reform period. She subsequently became Bishop of Bangor, leaving the dean’s role vacant and prompting the recruitment process that has now resulted in Ms Williams’s election.

Prediction: What Could This Mean for Cathedral Communities?

For worshippers, cathedral staff, volunteers and the wider Bangor community, Ms Williams’s appointment is likely to be judged by whether the reforms already initiated continue in practice. The Church in Wales has made clear that the dean is expected to strengthen governance, financial processes, safeguarding, communication and the cathedral’s culture.

For people affected by the earlier concerns, the appointment may provide a further step towards continuity, but it does not itself resolve outstanding questions. The Oversight Board’s published updates indicate that work on safeguarding, communication, policy development and complex human-resources matters has been ongoing, meaning scrutiny of delivery is likely to remain important.

For local residents and visitors, the new dean’s priorities may influence the cathedral’s public role, including its worship, arts activity, bilingual provision and connections with organisations across Bangor. The Church in Wales advertisement specifically identified these areas as part of the dean’s responsibilities.
