Arkadian Advances Clogau Gold Mine Exploration in Wales 2026

Key Points

  • Pressure washing and sampling have been carried out at the Jack Williams stope on the Arkadian Strategic Metals Plc 100% owned Clogau-St David’s Gold Mine in North Wales.
  • 21 samples (NC34 – NC54) were taken from the accessible upper Jack Williams west drive.
  • The work enabled exposure of the Main Lode vein, mostly in the roof of the drive, for geological examination and laboratory analysis in the future.
  • The samples consist of laminated quartz and shale veining, white quartz, sulphide-bearing rock and vein contacts.
  • In preliminary sample examinations galena, arsenopyrite, pyrite and other sulphides were found and further laboratory tests are required to find any connection with gold.
  • The vein becomes narrower going west and disappears at the southern turn of the drive.
  • Arkadian is excavating and processing historic floor material at one of the shafts of the mine, and hand-panning revealed material containing visible gold, but independent verification is still required.
  • Natural Resources Wales renewed the European Protected Species Licence for the mine until 31 March 2032.
  • George Frangeskides, Executive Chairman of Arkadian Strategic Metals Plc commented that this work proves company’s confidence in exploration prospects of the mine.

Wales (Wales Times) October 19, 2026 — Arkadian Strategic Metals Plc has completed pressure washing and an initial sampling programme at the Jack Williams stope within its Clogau-St David’s Gold Mine in north Wales, collecting 21 geological samples for mapping, assay and mineralogical analysis.

As reported by Investing.com, the London-listed company, which trades on AIM under the ticker AKN, said the work followed access works completed on 26 August 2026. The sampling was carried out along the accessible upper Jack Williams west drive, where pressure washing exposed the vein predominantly in the roof of the underground workings.

The announcement, issued through the London Stock Exchange’s Regulatory News Service, said the samples will now undergo detailed mapping, laboratory assays and mineralogical examination. Arkadian said these results will help assess whether further exploration is justified in this part of the mine.

What has Arkadian found at Jack Williams?

The Jack Williams stope lies at the western end of the historically worked Main Lode, the principal quartz-vein structure associated with most of Clogau’s historic gold production. Arkadian is investigating the exposed vein and surrounding rocks to assess potential exploration targets within the existing workings and westwards.

According to the company’s RNS announcement, carried by TradingView and Refinitiv, pressure washing was completed along the upper Jack Williams west drive to the point where the drive bends south. The vein was exposed mainly in the roof, while the entrance to the upper drive contains an extensive historic stope.

Sampling took place where remaining vein material was accessible in the roof beyond the stoped section. The 21 samples, numbered NC34 to NC54, include laminated veining, surrounding white quartz, sulphide-bearing material and vein contacts. Arkadian said the samples were selected to investigate variations in the exposed rocks.

Initial observations indicate at least two phases of vein formation. Arkadian said a laminated component, made up of alternating quartz and shale bands and historically described as “streaky bacon” veining, is commonly surrounded by more massive white quartz.

The company said the laminated component is generally approximately 5cm to 20cm thick in the observed sections. It stressed that these are visual estimates of the exposed component and do not establish true widths or assayed intervals.

Why does the vein’s westward narrowing matter?

Moving westwards, Arkadian said the laminated veining becomes narrower and more massive white quartz becomes dominant in places. Off-white to pink calcite bands were also present, and samples were collected to test these variations.

At the southward bend, the vein is no longer visible in the washed exposure. Arkadian said its continuation remains to be established through future exploration work, with further washing and mapping proposed to investigate the vein’s position and possible continuation.

The exposed sidewalls are predominantly shale, with local greenstone contacts. Initial observations suggest some greenstone exposures may represent smaller intrusive sills rather than the principal sill shown on existing geological maps.

A weathered, highly graphitic shale band containing pyrite has also been sampled beside the vein. Arkadian said further mapping is needed to clarify these geological relationships and compare them with laboratory results.

What minerals were identified in the samples?

Preliminary examination of cut samples has identified galena, arsenopyrite, pyrite and other sulphides. Arkadian said galena-bearing material from the first accessible vein section beyond the entrance stope is intended for thin-section examination and assay to investigate whether gold is associated with the mineral in the sampled area.

The company also reported pink surface staining, particularly in the eastern part of the upper west drive. Preliminary portable X-ray fluorescence analysis indicated cobalt and arsenic, with the staining provisionally identified as cobalt arsenate.

Arkadian said apparent gold signals recorded during this screening remain unverified and could reflect measurement error or weathering of historic exposed surfaces. It said these signals are not being reported as gold grades at this stage.

As reported by TipRanks, early observations indicate multiple phases of quartz and shale veining, with sulphide minerals including galena, arsenopyrite and pyrite. The company intends to use the findings to help define exploration targets within and beyond historically mined areas.

What is happening with historic shaft material?

Alongside the Jack Williams work, Arkadian is excavating and processing extensive floor material around one of the mine’s historic shafts. The company said sampling and hand-panning of the material has identified what are believed to be particles of visible gold.

The company said the material will be independently verified in due course through third-party assaying or refining. The floor is being dug from east to west in 1m² sections down to bedrock, with all material transported to Arkadian’s pilot processing plant for concentrating.

Concentrates will then be sent to the company’s usual third-party assay laboratory for assaying and extraction of any gold content. Arkadian said the pilot plant processing remains focused on this shaft-area material.

Has Arkadian received a regulatory boost?

Natural Resources Wales has renewed Arkadian’s European Protected Species Licence for the Lower Llechfraith mine system until 31 March 2032. The company said the renewal followed its formal application and provides a longer period than previous renewals.

The licence permits work activities in the Lower Llechfraith mine system through to 31 March 2032. Arkadian described it as one of the key regulatory approvals for the mine and said it provides a longer planning horizon for future work.

TipRanks reported that the licence renewal underpins Arkadian’s strategy of combining fresh exploration with the recovery of gold from legacy mine material at Clogau.

What did Arkadian’s chairman say?

George Frangeskides, Arkadian’s executive chairman, said the work advanced at Clogau on several fronts demonstrates the company’s confidence about the mine’s exploration potential.

“At Jack Williams, we have exposed and sampled sections of the Main Lode beyond the extensively mined entrance stope, giving us the opportunity to examine vein material that appears to have seen limited mining in the past,” Frangeskides said in the RNS announcement.

He added: “Alongside this work, the identification of what we believe to be visible gold in historic floor material around one of the shafts provides an encouraging focus for excavation and processing through our pilot plant.”

Frangeskides also said the renewal of the protected species licence through to March 2032 provides a longer planning horizon for future work in the Lower Llechfraith mine system.

“Our focus is two-pronged, both assessing the mineralogy of these different areas in order to prioritise gold exploration targets while at the same time pursuing opportunities to recover gold from historic mine material,” he said.

What happens next at Clogau?

Arkadian said the findings from Jack Williams will be incorporated into the wider mineralogical review at Clogau and used to assess priorities for further sampling and exploration development. The company said it will provide a further update once material results have been received and technically reviewed.

The announcement also contained forward-looking statements, with Arkadian noting that actual results may vary because of risks including exploration outcomes, regulatory processes, financing, staffing, technical issues and changes in plans.

Investing.com reported that the company collected the 21 samples following the completion of access works announced on 26 August 2026. Earlier reporting by Yahoo Finance said the newly established access route was designed to enable detailed geological inspections, mapping and systematic sampling across the westernmost historically worked section of the Main Lode.

Background of the development

Arkadian Strategic Metals Plc owns the exclusive exploration rights to the Clogau-St David’s Gold Mine in north Wales. According to the company’s RNS announcement, the mine is Britain’s largest historic gold producer, with recorded production of at least 80,000 ounces.

The mine is situated within the Dolgellau Gold Belt. Arkadian’s strategy combines geological investigation and targeted underground exploration with evaluation of gold recovery from historic mine material, while also developing commercial opportunities for Welsh gold through limited-edition coins, jewellery and other products.

In August 2026, Arkadian completed the installation of ladders and intermediate access platforms to establish a staged access route from the Tyn y Cornel Level into the Jack Williams stope area. The company said the route traverses an approximately 12-metre vertical section and uses existing mine workings.

The Jack Williams stope is located at the junction of the Tyn y Cornel adit and the Main Lode. It represents the westernmost historically mined portion of the Main Lode, the principal quartz-vein structure along which most historic mining at Clogau-St David’s took place.

The company’s half-yearly report for the six months ended 31 May 2026 said the principal focus at Clogau had been underground development and a bulk-sampling programme at the Llechfraith Target. It also said Level 5 development was paused while detailed geological sampling and mineralogical review work was undertaken.

Earlier reporting by Yahoo Finance said work at Clogau had shifted towards the Jack Williams stope after Level 5 processing returned uneconomic gold grades. The company’s wider portfolio also includes the Motzfeldt Critical Metals Project in southern Greenland, which contains rare earth elements, niobium, tantalum and zirconium.

Prediction: How could this affect investors and the Welsh mining sector?

For AIM investors, the immediate significance of the update lies in the next laboratory results rather than the sampling completion itself. Arkadian has not reported gold grades from the Jack Williams samples, and it has explicitly said apparent gold signals from portable X-ray fluorescence screening remain unverified and are not being reported as gold grades.

If assays and mineralogical work confirm a meaningful association between gold and the observed sulphide minerals, the results could support further sampling, mapping and potentially underground exploration towards the west of the Main Lode. Conversely, if laboratory work does not establish a clear gold association, the company may need to redirect its exploration priorities within the wider Clogau review.

For investors following Arkadian, the visible-gold material around the historic shaft may become an important near-term indicator. Independent third-party assaying or refining is still required, meaning the market will be watching for confirmation of both the presence and recoverable quantity of gold in the processed material.

The renewed protected species licence until 31 March 2032 may reduce near-term regulatory uncertainty for work in the Lower Llechfraith mine system. It gives Arkadian a longer planning window, although future exploration and any commercial development would still depend on technical results, financing, operational capacity and further approvals.

For the Welsh mining and local-economic audience, continued activity at Clogau maintains attention on the Dolgellau Gold Belt and the potential for gold recovery from historic workings. Any confirmed exploration success could support further investment and specialist employment, while the company’s stated interest in Welsh gold products could also create opportunities in premium jewellery and collectible markets.

For now, the development marks a procedural but potentially important stage: Arkadian has gained access, exposed the Main Lode at Jack Williams and collected samples, but the commercial case will depend on independently verified assay results and the outcome of its wider mineralogical review.
