What happened in Newport?

Gwent Police said it received a report of a road traffic collision in Tregare Street, Newport, at about 07:45 BST on Tuesday. The force said the collision involved a school bus and a railway bridge.

As reported by the BBC, officers attended alongside crews from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and the Welsh Ambulance Service. Gwent Police said in a statement: “Three children have sustained injuries and will be attending hospital for treatment; their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.”

ITV Wales reported that the collision occurred in Tregare Street and that police, fire and rescue and ambulance crews attended the scene. The broadcaster said Tregare Street was closed and diversions were in place.

Which schools were involved?

Newport City Council named the schools involved as Ysgol Gyfun Gwent Is Coed and St Julian’s School.

The BBC reported that the bus was travelling to Ysgol Gyfun Gwent Is Coed, a Welsh-medium secondary school in the Duffryn area of Newport. WalesOnline reported that the Newport Bus had been carrying schoolchildren from both schools when it hit the bridge.

The Daily Record reported that the vehicle was a public service bus used by local pupils and that students from the two schools were on board at the time.

How severe were the children’s injuries?

Police said the three children were being taken to hospital for treatment, but their injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

WalesOnline reported that Jo Townsend received a call from her 13-year-old son, Gruff, shortly after the collision. She told WalesOnline:

“I got a call at 7.45am from my son saying the bus had crashed. I got dressed as fast as possible and rushed to the site of the accident. The area was taped off and the images were shocking and of course worried me.”

According to WalesOnline, Gruff was checked by paramedics at a local nursery and was later told he would need further observations at the Grange University Hospital. His mother said he was discharged at about midday, feeling sore and in shock and with a “nasty bump to the head”.

What did emergency services do?

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, the Welsh Ambulance Service and Gwent Police all responded to the incident.

WalesOnline reported that photographs and video from the scene showed the roof had been completely removed from the bus by emergency services. The report also said a local nursery, Lullabyz, opened for emergency services while paramedics treated casualties.

Jo Townsend told WalesOnline: “The nursery Lullabyz were great and opened up for paramedics to start seeing kids. There were two fire engines, an ambulance and police cars when I got there. So I saw all the lights before getting to the site.”

Was rail travel disrupted?

Yes. Transport for Wales said train services between Newport and Hereford could be cancelled or delayed for up to an hour following the collision.

WalesOnline reported that the incident affected rail operators including CrossCountry, Great Western Railway and Transport for Wales. The North Wales Live report said lines were blocked after the bus hit a bridge near Newport station.

Transport for Wales said the bus had hit a bridge at Maindee West, between Newport and Cwmbran, according to reporting carried by The Star.

What happens next?

Newport City Council and Newport Bus have launched a formal investigation into the crash.

Councillor Dimitri Batrouni, leader of Newport City Council, said:

“I would like to thank all those involved in the swift response to the incident this morning and our thoughts are with those affected.”

Newport Bus said a full investigation was ongoing and that it would be inappropriate for the company to comment further at that stage, according to North Wales Live.

Background of the development

The collision occurred during the Tuesday morning school run in Tregare Street, near Newport city centre. The bus was reported to have struck a railway bridge at about 07:45 BST, prompting a multi-agency emergency response and temporary road and rail disruption.

Ysgol Gyfun Gwent Is Coed is a Welsh-medium secondary school in Newport, while St Julian’s School is also a Newport secondary school. Newport City Council identified both schools in connection with pupils travelling on the bus.

Low railway bridges are a recurring road-safety concern because vehicles that are too tall for a bridge’s clearance can strike the structure. In this case, authorities have not publicly stated what caused the bus to hit the bridge, and the formal investigation by Newport City Council and Newport Bus remains ongoing.

Prediction: How this could affect parents and commuters

For parents of pupils at Ysgol Gyfun Gwent Is Coed and St Julian’s School, the immediate effect is likely to be greater concern about school transport safety and a need for clear updates from Newport City Council and Newport Bus while the investigation continues. The confirmed injuries were not life-threatening, but the incident may prompt families to seek reassurance about route planning, vehicle suitability and bridge-clearance checks.

For commuters, disruption between Newport and Hereford may continue while engineers assess the bridge and normal services resume. Passengers using Transport for Wales, CrossCountry and Great Western Railway should check live travel updates before travelling, as operators had warned of cancellations or delays of up to an hour.
