In a shocking decision, the English government has decided to release hundreds of prisoners from jail. On Thursday, 1 October 2026, the first wave of 700 prisoners walked free, marking the beginning of a phased program that will ultimately see roughly 70,000 offenders eligible for early release between now and June 2027.

The English government implemented the legislation to tackle jail overcrowding, which has posed a serious challenge for the prison administration. The prisoners had to share cells, putting their health and safety at risk. However, it has obviously made the public weary and disturbed.

According to the BBC, Helen Duncanson from North Yorkshire says she is suffering from “night terrors and panic” after being told her abuser could be eligible for early release. However, the administration led by Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Justice Secretary Alex Norris assured that the prisoners were being released under the ‘toughest supervision in British History’.

This move is part of the Sentencing Act 2026, implemented to tackle jail overcrowding. Jail overcrowding has been a serious issue in Wales and England recently. According to the BBC, the prisons are reaching their maximum capacity. The Ministry of Justice revealed that 87,499 people were imprisoned, bringing prison population levels to 98.2%.

prisons in England and Wales are months away from reaching capacity, with Ministry of Justice data showing that, as of Monday, 87,499 people were incarcerated, bringing prison population levels to 98.2%.

However, the victims are weary and unhappy.
