As announced by Business Wales, the Investment Fund for Wales will deliver a £130 million commitment of new funding to businesses. The fund is designed to drive sustainable economic growth by supporting innovation and creating local opportunities for businesses across Wales.

What funding is available through the Investment Fund for Wales?

The Investment Fund for Wales provides three commercial finance options. According to Business Wales, these are smaller loans from £25,000 to £100,000, debt finance from £100,000 to £2 million, and equity investment of up to £5 million.

The British Business Bank, which operates the fund, says IFW is intended to increase the supply and diversity of early-stage finance for smaller businesses in Wales. It states that the fund can provide money to firms that might otherwise not receive investment and help reduce barriers to accessing finance.

The fund is available throughout Wales, including rural, coastal and urban areas. Business Wales says it covers the whole country.

How can Welsh businesses apply for the fund?

Businesses cannot apply directly to the British Business Bank for IFW investment. In its frequently asked questions, the bank says enquiries and applications must be made directly to IFW’s selected fund managers.

The bank also states that IFW does not invest directly in businesses. Instead, it invests through product funds managed by appointed fund managers.

The three appointed fund managers are BCRS Business Loans, FW Capital and Foresight. As reported by the British Business Bank in February 2026, these managers had delivered more than £37 million of investment into 93 Welsh businesses since the fund launched in November 2023.

The British Business Bank advises that IFW cannot provide financial or business advice to businesses seeking funding. It says businesses may wish to engage their own accountant or business adviser for application support.

Who can apply for Investment Fund for Wales support?

The fund is aimed at smaller businesses across Wales that need finance to start, grow or scale. According to the British Business Bank, investments can be made in businesses that are headquartered in Wales or have a significant operating presence there.

The bank says the fund has an inclusive approach, but eligibility criteria apply. It advises businesses to contact fund managers, who can advise on whether a proposal is suitable.

IFW product funds can invest alone or alongside other funders. The British Business Bank says fund managers are encouraged to bring in additional private capital, meaning IFW finance may support larger funding packages where required.

Why has the fund been opened for applications?

Business Wales says the fund aims to support innovation and create local opportunity for new and growing businesses. It also describes the funding as a way to drive sustainable economic growth across Wales.

The British Business Bank says the fund’s design includes environmental, social and governance awareness and is intended to support the UK economy’s transition to net zero.

The fund has already supported a range of Welsh businesses. The British Business Bank’s website lists investments including £150,000 for Llandudno-based Wild Horse Brewing Co, a six-figure investment for Swansea construction firm Green’s Construction, and a £1.5 million equity investment for accountancy automation company Bots for That.

In February 2026, the British Business Bank reported a £3.5 million equity investment into Advantiv Limited, an industrial services firm based in Merthyr Tydfil and Pembroke Dock. It described this as the largest single deal to date from the fund.

What support is available alongside the fund?

Business Wales says businesses can use its finance locator to identify finance options relevant to their needs. It also points businesses to guides explaining different types of finance and information about working with accountants.

Business Wales also highlights the Development Bank of Wales as a lender to businesses in Wales. Its announcement directs readers to its “Finding Finance” area for further support.

The Business Wales helpline is available on 03000 6 03000, with lines open from 10am to 4pm, Monday to Friday. Business Wales says calls are welcomed in Welsh.

Background of the development

The Investment Fund for Wales was launched in November 2023 as a £130 million fund operated by the British Business Bank. According to the bank, it was created to provide commercially focused finance to smaller businesses across Wales through smaller loans, debt finance and equity finance.

The fund’s £50 million equity element is managed by Foresight. Foresight says it invests up to £5 million into growing companies across Wales, or companies aspiring to scale within Wales, from its Cardiff office.

The fund forms part of the British Business Bank’s wider Nations and Regions Investment Funds programme. The bank says IFW is designed to address gaps in early-stage finance and provide funding to businesses that may struggle to secure investment through conventional finance providers.

Prediction: What the fund could mean for Welsh businesses

The reopening and promotion of applications is likely to increase awareness among Welsh small and medium-sized enterprises seeking growth capital. Businesses in sectors such as manufacturing, technology, construction, hospitality and local services may use the fund to finance equipment, recruitment, research and development, premises, expansion or working capital.

For businesses outside major city centres, the fund’s coverage of rural, coastal and urban Wales may be particularly relevant. The British Business Bank says the fund is intended to support firms that might otherwise not receive investment, which could improve access to finance for businesses in areas with fewer conventional funding options.

For Welsh founders and owner-managers, the practical effect will depend on eligibility, the strength of their business plans and the assessment of the appointed fund managers. However, the availability of finance from £25,000 up to £5 million gives businesses a wider range of options than a single loan product, while the possibility of co-investment with private funders could support larger growth plans.
