BBC to make BBC Three and BBC Scotland Online Only Channels Amidst Budget Cuts

Overview

On the 20th of October 2026, BBC News announced that television channels BBC Three and BBC Scotland will be closed and moved onto BBC iPlayer as a result of budgeting cuts at the BBC. These channels are reportedly going to be taken down from satellite television in spring of 2027 and will be found on their new home of BBC iPlayer. Alongside these channels, BBC’s Radio 4 Extra will also be closing, often airing programmes from the BBC’s archive.

BBC Three and BBC Scotland

BBC Three originally came onto television in 2003 and was a channel aimed for younger audiences between the age of 16 and 34. Starting their programming at 7pm and ending at 4am, this channel would host iconic British shows such as Little Britian, Gavin and Stacey, The Mighty Boosh and even American shows such as Family Guy later on into BBC Three’s lifespan before eventually being moved over to ITV2 in 2015.

In 2016 however, the BBC announced that BBC Three would be moved onto BBC iPlayer due to budget cuts. Despite the uproar from audiences that enjoyed watching the programmes on the channel, BBC Three made its move onto iPlayer in early 2016 where it remained for 6 years. In 2022, BBC had relaunched BBC Three back onto satellite television, homing popular television shows such as RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, Race Across the World and EastEnders.

First beginning as a radio station within the early 1920s, BBC Scotland has evolved over the 100+ years of its existence. Arriving to Scottish televisions in the 1950s, BBC Scotland’s first steps as a television channel was hosting programmes that originated in London and retransmitting them for Scottish audiences, often featuring traditional or stereotypical representations of Scottish culture. In 2019, BBC Scotland got its own, dedicated free-to-air television channel by the same name, hosting programming of Scottish origin such as The Nine, Guilt and live sporting events of Scotland. Not even 10 years into its lifespan, BBC Scotland is set to close alongside BBC Three in the spring of 2027 in response to financial pressures within the broadcasting company and moved onto BBC iPlayer.

Why this move makes sense financially

Given that these decisions are expected to result in the loss of approximately 1,800 to 2,000 jobs, the financial rationale behind the BBC’s restructuring warrants critical examination. The former chairman of ITV defended the measures, stating that:

“The essence of it is it protects the spending on content, it really cuts money in the distribution of programmes, and it really had to happen because the BBC has lost 30% of its revenue in 10 years.”

From this perspective, the cuts are presented as a necessary response to long-term financial pressures rather than simply a cost-reduction exercise. The BBC’s wider savings strategy, which includes a £500 million cost-cutting programme, the removal of up to 2,000 jobs (almost 10% of its workforce), and the closure or transition to online-only formats for services such as BBC Three, BBC Scotland, and Radio 4 Extra, reflects a growing disparity between rising operational costs and licence fee revenue that has remained frozen or declined in real terms. Consequently, the restructuring can be understood as an attempt to preserve investment in content production while reducing expenditure elsewhere across the organisation.

How this move can be worrisome for the public image of the BBC

Despite these decisions being accepted as necessary by some due to financial pressures, others are concerned on how this will impact the BBC’s public image. The BBC has already come under fire in recent years due to the expenses of television licences, some fear that further cuts to the BBC’s channels and programming are going to further impact negative public attitudes towards the broadcasting company. The Entertainment trade union company Equity has commented on this announcement by the BBC, stating that this decision “does not signal a thriving BBC, and we are concerned about the UK’s preeminent public service broadcaster’s ability to meet its duties to the fullest”.
