As reported by WalesOnline, Mears said during evidence on Tuesday that he did not intend to kill Mr Kerr. Asked whether he had intended to kill him, he replied: “No way.” He later added: “I didn’t mean to kill him at all.”

What did Georgie Mears tell the court?

Mears told the court that he had been involved in drug dealing in the Caerphilly area and had previously supplied Mr Kerr with ketamine on more than one occasion. He said he had heard concerning things about Mr Kerr, including a video in which Mr Kerr appeared to chase Connor Palfrey with a dog and a knife.

The defendant said that, on the day of the fatal incident, he, Mr Palfrey and Ricardo Elliot were driven by Elexi Manny to Cardiff Magistrates’ Court for a hearing involving their friend Kai Raven. He alleged that Manny later asked him to retrieve a knife hidden in a sofa at a property in Lower Francis Street, Abertridwr. Mears said he took a black-handled kitchen knife and concealed it in his waistband.

Mears said the group later visited the Piccadilly Inn in Caerphilly before going to the home of Ieuan Crane in Lower Francis Street. He said they had gone there after a request for drugs. When they entered, he described an “unsettling atmosphere” and said Mr Kerr approached him.

Why does Mears say he stabbed Tristan Kerr?

Giving evidence, Mears said he believed Mr Kerr was about to attack him. He told the court that Mr Kerr swung a punch which narrowly missed him, and that he tried to push him away before slipping during a physical struggle.

As reported by WalesOnline, Mears said he felt cornered and feared for his safety. He told the court that he believed Mr Kerr would take his knife and stab him. He said that, in a moment of panic, he drew the knife and stabbed Mr Kerr in the side.

When Christopher Rees KC, defending Mears, asked about the force used, Mears said he was in a state of panic and uncertainty. He said his main aim was to leave the room, but alleged that Mr Kerr continued to resist him. Mears said he eventually escaped through the back of the house and got into a vehicle driven by Manny, with Palfrey following.

He denied any plan to harm Mr Kerr, saying: “Never, never.” He reiterated that he had acted because he feared for his own safety.

What does the prosecution allege?

Prosecutor Michael Jones KC has told the jury that Mears fatally stabbed Mr Kerr in the chest in the living room shortly after the group arrived at the property. The court was told that Mears used a Rambo-style knife, while Palfrey was said to have been armed with a wooden stick.

Mr Jones said the incident unfolded in less than two minutes and that Mr Kerr died at the scene because of the severity of his injuries.

As reported by the BBC’s Colette Hume, Mr Kerr bled to death in the street minutes after being stabbed in the heart and lung with a so-called zombie knife on 5 February. The South Wales Argus has also reported that the prosecution says the fatal wound was inflicted deliberately with a Rambo-style knife by Mears.

The prosecution case is that, although Mears delivered the fatal blow, all four defendants bear joint responsibility. In earlier proceedings, Mr Jones was reported by the BBC as saying: “Although that fatal blow was delivered by Mears, all four of them bear the joint responsibility for, and are therefore guilty of, his murder.”

Who are the four defendants?

Mears is on trial alongside Connor Palfrey, Ricardo Elliot and Elexi Manny. All four deny murder through joint enterprise, a legal doctrine under which people who assist or encourage another person to commit murder can be convicted of the same offence.

DefendantAgeAddress given in court reportingAlleged role according to prosecution reporting
Georgie Mears19No fixed abode; previously reported as Thornhill, CardiffAccepted stabbing Mr Kerr, but claims self-defence
Connor Palfrey25Aberfawr Terrace, AbertridwrAlleged to have supported Mears and warned others not to get involved
Ricardo Elliot27Formerly of London; now Parc Prison, BridgendAlleged to have acted as a lookout in the hallway
Elexi Manny25Commercial Street, SenghenyddAlleged to have been the getaway driver in a Volkswagen Polo

The South Wales Argus reported that Mr Jones told jurors that Palfrey supported Mears and warned his friends not to become involved, while Elliot acted as a lookout and Manny drove the group away from the scene.

What did witnesses say happened?

Ieuan Crane, in whose flat the attack occurred, told the jury that he, Mr Kerr and two other men had been “just chilling”, playing computer games and watching YouTube when Palfrey and Mears entered through the unlocked front door.

As reported by BBC Wales, Mr Crane said:

“Tristan didn’t have a chance to do anything. It happened like that.” He said Mears ran ahead of Palfrey and began attacking Mr Kerr, who had been sitting on a two-seater sofa near the stairs.

Mr Crane said he initially thought Mears was punching Mr Kerr and did not see a knife until after the fourth blow. He described the weapon as a “big” knife and a “Zombie, Rambo blade”. He said he tried to grab Mears’s arm and wrist, but alleged that Palfrey threatened him with a block of wood.

Mr Crane said Mr Kerr and another friend, known as “Custard”, escaped through the back door. He said he pushed Palfrey and Mears out of the house, locked the door, and later saw Mr Kerr collapsed in the street with blood dripping down to his white socks.

What was said about a previous dispute?

The court has heard evidence of a previous disagreement between Mr Kerr and Palfrey. Mr Crane said Palfrey had what he described as “beef” with Mr Kerr after an incident in which the teenager was said to have chased Palfrey with his dog.

Mr Crane told the jury that, about a week or two later, Mr Kerr went to see Palfrey and they “squashed their beef”, meaning the dispute had been resolved.

Mears also referred to the alleged incident in his evidence. He said he had seen a video in which Mr Kerr appeared to chase Palfrey with a dog and a knife, and said the video had been posted publicly.

What did Elexi Manny tell police?

The South Wales Argus reported that Manny, when arrested, told a police officer: “I had f*** all to do with it!” In interview, she said she knew Mr Kerr because both had visited Mr Crane’s home on Lower Francis Street.

She described Mr Kerr as a “quite quiet and a nice boy” and said there were no issues between them. The court heard she told detectives:

“I liked Tristan as one of the boys. I had nothing against him and I had no part in his death. I don’t know why he was stabbed but I had no part in it.”

Manny said she had arranged to give Palfrey a lift to Hereford on the day of Mr Kerr’s death so that he could see his girlfriend. She said she was unemployed, living in a hostel and gave people lifts in return for money. She said that, during the journey from Caerphilly to Hereford, music on the radio was loud and she did not hear what the others were discussing.

The prosecution has closed its case. The trial was not sitting the following day, with defence cases expected to begin the following Monday, according to the South Wales Argus.

What happened after the stabbing?

Mr Kerr was found with stab injuries after police were called to a flat in Abertridwr on the evening of Thursday, 5 February, ITV News Wales reported. The BBC reported that he was attacked in the living room of the Lower Francis Street property and later collapsed in the street.

All four defendants were arrested in Hereford in the hours after the alleged murder, the BBC and South Wales Argus reported. At an earlier hearing, ITV News Wales reported that the defendants were remanded in custody.

Mr Kerr’s family previously paid tribute to him. As reported by ITV News Wales, they described the 17-year-old as “brave”.

Background of the development

Tristan Shae Kerr, 17, was from Abertridwr in Caerphilly. He died on 5 February 2026 after being stabbed at a house in Lower Francis Street.

The four defendants were charged with murder. At a hearing on 20 March 2026, all four pleaded not guilty, the BBC reported. ITV News Wales also reported that the four denied murder at that stage.

The trial began at Newport Crown Court in October 2026. The South Wales Argus reported that the case concerns an incident at a house on Lower Francis Street in Abertridwr in February, and that the defendants all deny the offence.

Court reporting has also referred to drugs found at the property after the incident. The BBC reported that a large quantity of cannabis was found in a freezer at the flat, along with a shotgun cartridge and weighing scales. Mr Crane said he had forgotten about the drugs and did not knowingly allow friends to deal drugs from his home.

Prediction: how could this affect the local community?

For people in Abertridwr and the wider Caerphilly area, the trial is likely to keep attention focused on community safety, knife crime and the circumstances surrounding young people’s involvement in drugs and violence. The evidence heard so far includes allegations of drug dealing, a previous dispute and the use of a large knife, all of which may increase concern among residents, parents and local community groups.

If the jury convicts any or all of the defendants, the outcome could reinforce the legal principle of joint enterprise, under which people allegedly involved in assisting or encouraging a fatal attack may face the same murder charge as the person who delivered the fatal blow. For local residents, the case may also prompt renewed calls for visible policing, youth support and drug-related intervention in the area, although any such response would depend on the trial’s outcome and decisions by local authorities and police.
