  • Prediction: what it could mean for young runners

As reported by David Pye of The Bolton News, Wilkinson finished third overall in an excellent time of 17 minutes 43 seconds over the demanding 5k course. Her result also secured victory in the Under-20 age category, underlining her progress as a young endurance runner competing for uk/local/bangor/">Bangor University.

The course at Eirias Park was described as tough and twisty, presenting runners with a test that required sustained concentration as well as endurance. Despite those conditions, Wilkinson’s time of 17:43 placed her among the leading runners in the overall field and gave her a clear age-group success.

Her performance was especially significant for Horwich RMI Harriers because it came during what the club described as a relatively quiet week for its athletes. While many members were involved in parkrun events across different locations, Wilkinson’s cross-country result stood out as the leading competitive achievement of the period.

How did Charlotte Wilkinson achieve the result?

Wilkinson competed in the North Wales Cross-Country League while representing Bangor University. Her third-place finish overall was not merely a strong personal result; it also carried the additional achievement of first place in the Under-20 category.

The North Wales Cross-Country League brings together runners from clubs and universities across the region, and results are often shaped by course conditions, terrain and the strength of the field. At Eirias Park, Wilkinson handled a 5k route described as tough and twisty, demonstrating both pace and consistency across the distance.

Her 17:43 finishing time was described in the original report as excellent, reflecting the quality of her run against the broader field. The result also confirmed her ability to compete effectively at regional level while balancing university representation with her club commitments.

What comes next for Wilkinson?

Wilkinson’s success has opened a further opportunity at regional level. She has graduated to represent North Wales at the Welsh inter-regionals, which are scheduled for November 21.

One week after that championship fixture, she is expected to return to Horwich RMI Harriers colours when the club competes in Sefton. The sequence of events gives Wilkinson a demanding but important block of racing, moving from university and regional representation back into club competition.

For Horwich RMI Harriers, her selection for North Wales represents recognition of her current form. It also gives the club a high-profile athlete to follow as the cross-country season develops.

Which other Harriers were in action?

While Wilkinson’s result was the leading competitive performance, several other Horwich RMI Harriers athletes took part in parkrun events across the United Kingdom and internationally.

Isaline Kneale was the club’s most distant competitor, racing at Albert Park in Melbourne, Australia. She won the VL60 age group in a time of 28:59.

The Middleton family took part in a new event in Grizedale Forest in the Lake District. Jason Middleton finished in 26:42, while Janet Middleton recorded 35:33. Miriam Harrison competed at Parke parkrun in Devon, completing the course in 28:22.

Young runner Oliver Hughes produced a strong performance in Wales, finishing as the best in his age group at Flint Castle in 22:37. Milly Lever completed Isobel Trail parkrun in Stafford in 20:23.

How did local parkrun runners perform?

Closer to home, Gareth Webb returned to action at Bolton after recent issues, recording 21:53. Michael Salmon and Linda Webb ran together at Worden, both finishing in 25:26, while Gordon Stone completed the same event in 33:09.

Richard Pollitt produced the fastest parkrun time of any Horwich RMI Harrier during the week, clocking 17:51 at the flat Alexandra course. Marcus Taylor took on the hills of Heaton Park and finished in 19:27, while Tony Hesketh recorded 30:06.

At Peel, Abigail Taylor finished in 28:33, narrowly ahead of Florence Taylor, who recorded 29:02. Steve Jackson completed the Peel trio in 31:59.

Ellie Leach ran at Preston in 38:48. At Haigh Woodland, Louis Yates led six Harriers home in 22:17, followed by Jeanette Lewis in 27:02. Gail Maxfield finished in 30:58, narrowly ahead of Andrew Storey on 31:31, while Gillian Smith recorded 42:35 and Michelle Mortimer finished in 59:50.

Did any Harrier reach a major summit?

Away from cross-country and parkrun competition, Julian Goudge achieved a long-held personal ambition by reaching the summit of Mount Toubkal in Morocco.

As reported by David Pye of The Bolton News, Goudge had first considered climbing the mountain around 25 years ago. Mount Toubkal, located in the High Atlas range, rises to 4,167 metres above sea level and is the highest mountain in North Africa.

Goudge was on holiday in Marrakesh when he completed the climb alongside family friends. The report described major temperature differences between Marrakesh and the mountain: while Marrakesh reached 35 degrees Celsius, conditions on the snow-capped peaks included a wind-chill temperature of minus 25 degrees.

His successful summit attempt added an endurance achievement away from racing, highlighting the range of activities undertaken by members of Horwich RMI Harriers beyond formal competition.

What does the result mean for Horwich RMI Harriers?

Wilkinson’s Under-20 title provides a positive competitive headline for Horwich RMI Harriers at a stage when many club members were spread across parkrun venues rather than competing in a single championship event.

Her third-place overall finish at Eirias Park demonstrates that she is capable of competing strongly against senior and university-level opposition, while still winning her age category. The result also strengthens the club’s presence in regional cross-country competition through her upcoming North Wales selection.

The wider results from parkrun events show continued participation across age groups and locations. From Kneale’s age-group win in Australia to Pollitt’s 17:51 at Alexandra, the club’s athletes were active across a broad range of courses and conditions.

Background of the development

Charlotte Wilkinson’s achievement comes within the North Wales Cross-Country League, a competitive series in which athletes represent clubs and universities across the region. Her participation for Bangor University reflects the connection between university athletics and club-level competition, with runners often representing both institutions during the season.

Eirias Park in Colwyn Bay has hosted cross-country fixtures and provides a 5k course that can test athletes through changes in terrain and direction. Wilkinson’s result was achieved on a course described as tough and twisty, making her 17:43 time and Under-20 victory particularly notable.

Her progression to the Welsh inter-regionals on November 21 gives the result greater sporting significance. Selection to represent North Wales places her among athletes chosen to compete at regional level, while her planned appearance for Horwich RMI Harriers in Sefton maintains her link with the club.

Prediction: what it could mean for young runners

For young athletes in Horwich RMI Harriers and similar clubs, Wilkinson’s result may serve as a practical example of how consistent club training, university competition and regional selection can connect. Her move from an Under-20 league victory to North Wales representation shows a clear competitive pathway for developing runners.

For Horwich RMI Harriers members, the result could encourage greater participation in cross-country fixtures, particularly among younger athletes seeking age-group honours. The club’s wider parkrun results also suggest an active membership base, with runners of different ages and abilities taking part across local and international venues.

For supporters and local runners in the Bolton area, Wilkinson’s upcoming appearances at the Welsh inter-regionals and in Sefton will provide opportunities to follow her progress. If her current form continues, she may become an increasingly important competitor for both Bangor University and Horwich RMI Harriers as the cross-country season progresses.
