Wales (Wales Times) November 03, 2026 — A 14-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of a public order offence and later bailed with conditions, after social media footage appeared to show a Coventry City supporter using a photograph of the late Sunderland fan Bradley Lowery to taunt visiting supporters during Saturday’s Premier League fixture.

The alleged incident took place at the Coventry Building Society Arena during Coventry City’s 3–1 victory over Sunderland. Footage circulated online after the match and appeared to show a young spectator in the home end holding up a mobile-phone image of Bradley Lowery towards Sunderland supporters in the away end.

As reported by the BBC, the video appeared to show the supporter pointing at the image while smirking. The broadcaster said the footage was widely shared on social media and prompted a police investigation.

West Midlands Police confirmed on Tuesday: “A teenage boy arrested on suspicion of a public order offence in Coventry has been bailed with conditions.”

The force said the 14-year-old handed himself in on Sunday. It added that it understood the “upset and outrage” the video had caused in the community and to the victim’s family.

Why was the teenager arrested?

West Midlands Police said the arrest related to a suspected public order offence. The force has not publicly identified the boy, who is legally a minor, and has not confirmed whether any charge will follow.

According to Sky News, police said the teenager was arrested on suspicion of a public order offence and subsequently bailed. The broadcaster reported that social media footage appeared to show a fan holding up a photograph of Bradley during the match.

The Independent reported that the alleged incident occurred during Saturday’s 3–1 win and that the teenager handed himself in to West Midlands Police on Sunday after footage circulated online.

It is important to distinguish between an arrest and a criminal charge. An arrest means police have detained a person in connection with a suspected offence; it does not itself establish guilt. The boy remains on bail with conditions while the investigation continues.

Who was Bradley Lowery?

Bradley Lowery was a young Sunderland supporter whose illness and relationship with the football community attracted widespread public attention. He was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a rare and aggressive form of childhood cancer, and died in 2017 at the age of six.

As reported by ESPN, Bradley “captured the hearts of the football world” during his illness. The outlet described neuroblastoma as a rare form of childhood cancer and noted that he died in 2017.

Bradley was closely associated with Sunderland AFC and became known to supporters across English football. His image has often been used in tributes by fans and clubs, which is why the alleged use of his photograph during a match has prompted such a strong reaction.

What did West Midlands Police say?

West Midlands Police issued statements on Sunday and Tuesday as the investigation developed.

In its initial response, reported by TalkSport, the force said:

“We are aware of a video circulating on social media showing an incident at Coventry City’s Premier League match with Sunderland yesterday afternoon (31 Oct).”

The force added:

“A thorough investigation has been launched, and a 14-year-old boy has since handed himself in and will be spoken with in due course.”

In a later statement, reported by Sky News, ITV News and other outlets, West Midlands Police said: “A teenage boy arrested on suspicion of a public order offence in Coventry has been bailed with conditions.”

The police also said: “We understand the upset and outrage this video has caused in the community and to the victim’s family and our officers are keeping them up to date with the progress of our investigation and working closely alongside both football clubs.”

What did Coventry City say?

Coventry City confirmed that it was aware of footage circulating on social media in connection with an incident during its Premier League fixture against Sunderland.

In a statement reported by Metro and TalkSport, the club said:

“Coventry City FC is aware of footage circulating on social media in connection with an incident during our Premier League fixture against Sunderland.”

The club added:

“The club does not tolerate offensive behaviour and will liaise with the relevant authorities to determine the appropriate course of action.”

Coventry has not announced any specific sanction, stadium ban or disciplinary outcome. Any club action would be separate from the police investigation and could depend on the findings of that inquiry.

What did Bradley Lowery’s family say?

Bradley’s mother, Gemma Lowery, responded publicly through the Bradley Lowery Foundation after the footage emerged.

As reported by ESPN, she urged people not to “direct any hate, threats or harm” towards the teenage boy or his family.

In a further statement quoted by TalkSport, she said she had spoken to West Midlands Police and been informed that the person involved was in custody. She also said she had been told that the boy was 14 years old, the same age Bradley would have been had he still been alive.

She wrote: “I have also been informed that he is only 14 years old, same age as Bradley would be now if he was still with us.”

Gemma Lowery also said that the police and Coventry City Football Club would both speak with the teenager, adding that she hoped this would help him understand the seriousness of his actions and the impact such behaviour can have on families and friends.

Metro reported that she said:

“My beautiful boy deserves to be remembered with love, not hate.”

What happens next in the investigation?

The investigation remains ongoing. West Midlands Police have confirmed that the boy has been bailed with conditions, but have not said when he may be required to return or whether prosecutors will consider charging him.

The force has said it is working closely with both Coventry City and Sunderland, and is keeping Bradley Lowery’s family informed about developments.

Coventry City has said it will liaise with the relevant authorities to determine the appropriate course of action. That leaves open the possibility of club-level measures, although no such action has been confirmed publicly.

Background of the development

Bradley Lowery was a Sunderland supporter from Blackhall Colliery, County Durham, whose battle with neuroblastoma received national attention. He died in July 2017, aged six.

His family established the Bradley Lowery Foundation, which has continued to campaign and support causes connected with his memory. Bradley became widely recognised among football supporters, and Sunderland fans have regularly honoured him at matches.

The alleged incident occurred during a Premier League match between Coventry City and Sunderland at the Coventry Building Society Arena. Coventry won 3–1. The footage was shared online shortly afterwards, leading to condemnation from supporters and prompting responses from West Midlands Police and Coventry City.

Prediction: How this may affect football fans

For football supporters, the development may increase scrutiny of behaviour inside stadiums, particularly conduct directed at opposing fans or involving sensitive personal tragedies. Clubs and police may face renewed pressure to identify and act against offensive crowd behaviour quickly.

For Coventry City supporters, the case could lead to further club communication once the police investigation progresses. Any eventual action by the club or authorities may influence how supporters view accountability for individual behaviour at matches.

For Sunderland fans and Bradley Lowery’s family, the police response may provide some reassurance that the alleged incident is being treated seriously. At the same time, the family’s appeal for no hate or threats towards the teenager highlights the risk of online backlash escalating beyond the original incident.

More broadly, the case may reinforce calls for football authorities, clubs and social media platforms to respond rapidly when footage of offensive behaviour spreads online. The outcome of the police investigation, and any subsequent club action, will determine the practical consequences for those involved.
