Train passengers in India, can breathe a sigh of relief as the Railways Ministry has approved a massive package of 252 crore to install Kavach 4.0, a train protection technology across 607.7 kilometers of railway lines in the Lucknow Division. The technology is designed by The Research Designs and Standards Organization (RDSO) Lucknow. The automated Train Protection System, Kavach 4.0, works like a shield, protecting against accidents due to human error, over speeding, and collisions.

According to DD News, the Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed

“Kavach version 4.0 covers all the major features required for the diverse railway network. This is a significant milestone in safety for Indian Railways. Within a short period, IR has developed, tested, and started deploying the Automatic Train Protection System! ”

India operates one of the largest, busiest, and most densely packed railway networks in the entire world, carrying millions of passengers and heavy freight every single day. Because of this massive traffic pressure, old infrastructure, and heavy reliance on human decisions, the railway system has frequently faced tragic accidents that endanger countless lives. From 1961 to 2019, India has witnessed more than 38,500 train accidents, according to reports.

We must look at five of the worst train accidents in Indian history to understand the seriousness of the situation:

  1. Firozabad Train Disaster (1995): A stationary passenger train was hit violently from behind by a speeding train during heavy morning fog, resulting in the loss of over 350 lives.
  2. Gaisal Train Collision (1999): Due to severe signaling errors and miscommunication, two high-speed trains, Brahmaputra Mail and Avadh Assam Express were mistakenly allowed onto the same track, leading to a destructive head-on crash and explosion that killed nearly 290 people. The deadly incident took place on  the Gaisal Railway Station in West Bengal.
  3. Khanna Derailment (1998): The Jammu Tawi Express crashed into the derailed coaches of another train lying on adjacent tracks, claiming over 210 lives. It happened adjacent to the Khanna station, yards in the Ludhiana district.
  4. Balasore Triple Train Crash (2023): The incident took place in Balasore in Odisha. Signaling and circuit failures caused a passenger express to collide with a stationary freight train, throwing coaches onto an adjoining track where another oncoming train struck them, killing close to 290 people.
  5. Perumon Bridge Derailment (1988): A sudden derailment caused multiple coaches to plunge off a bridge into the Ashtamudi Lake, in Kerala resulting in the deaths of over 100 passengers.

Primary Features of Kavach 4.0 Technology

The Research Designs and Standards Organization (RDSO) Lucknow, the R&D wing of the Railway Ministries, designed Kavach, originally called the Train Collision Avoidance System(TCAS). It was developed to reduce frequent tragic train accidents across India caused by human error, fatigue, and missed red signals (Signal Passed at Danger).

While foreign automated train protection systems were extremely expensive and complex, Indian Railways urgently needed a reliable, homegrown safety shield that was cost effective and suitable for Indian rail network.

The Primary Features of Kavach 4.0 include:

  • Prevention of Signal oriented Collisions – The system continuously monitors the line-side and cab signals. It automatically takes over and applies the emergency brakes if the loco-pilot fails to read the red signal due to stress, distraction, or dense fog.
  • Automated Speed Regulation – The system tracks the train’s speed in real time against temporary and permanent speed restrictions, bridges, loop lines, and sharp curves. The system automatically slows the train if it exceeds safe speed limits.
  • Prevention of Train Collisions – Kavach uses Ultra-High Frequency (UHF) radios, LTE-R networks, and trackside RFID tags to read occupied Railway Track intervals. It prevents collisions of trains operating on the same lines.
  • Provides Enhanced Visibility – It provides clear visibility regardless of environmental conditions by projecting real-time signals and movements, and tracks gradient profiles directly onto the Driver Machine Interface (DMI) screen inside the locomotive cabin.
  • Emergency SOS Signaling – During an onboard emergency, derailment, or track hazard, both loco pilots and station masters can trigger manual or automatic SOS signals that instantly apply emergency brakes to all Kavach-equipped locomotives within the designated danger radius.

Kavach 4.0: The Challenges!

The Kavach 4.0 technology undoubtedly is a boon for Indian Railways. However, the ministry has to overcome numerous challenges in installing this ambitious technology. Our rail network is about 150 years old, and Kavach 4.0 has to overcome all sorts of problems to work successfully. The various challenges are given below –

  • Time-consuming Installation: Kavach 4.0 technology requires thousands of trackside RFID tags, towers, and locomotive units across India’s massive rail network. Their installation is quite time-consuming.
  • Modification too Expensive: Installing advanced technology, such as computers and electronic braking modules, in old engines is complex and expensive.
  • Bullet Train Speed Limits: The system is currently optimized for speeds up to 160 km/h, making it unsuited for 300+ km/h bullet trains without further upgrades.
  • Yard Interlocking Dependency: Many stations are yet to upgrade to new technology. The train-tracking accuracy of Kavach 4.0 depends upon the first upgrade to a modern electronic interlocking system.
  • Limited pool of Manufacturers: A limited pool of RDSO-certified domestic electronics manufacturers slows down the mass manufacturing of hardware.

Train journeys are one of the most gratifying experiences in India.   The topsy-turvy terrain, the countryside view, hills and rivers, the culturally different people, the irreplaceable call of the ‘Chaiwallah’, and that blissful ‘Kulhad Tea’ make it a journey to cherish forever! However, the tragic train accidents have turned ecstasy into agony. Several incidents resulted in the loss of many lives and countless injuries.

Kavach 4.0, devised by RDSO, Lucknow, has minimized risk and upgraded safety measures for the complex and extensive Indian rail network! The cost-effective technique, no doubt has many challenges. However, it has achieved the global safety rating – SIL-4 certificate, the highest international safety standard for railways. It provides assurance for enhanced safety. So, say it with a smile, “Have a safe journey”!
