Key Points

  • Five men have been arrested in relation to an event that took place in 2023, where a hearse and a Subaru drove out onto the field at the ground of Dunston UTC in a match between the teams of Dunston and Gateshead.
  • The match held on 21st July 2023 was abandoned at half time when the scoreline stood 1-1 following the distribution of leaflets from the hearse.
  • According to Northumbria Police, the arrests are part of what has been referred to as “Operation Sentinel”, which is a regional response to serious and organised crimes.
  • The arrested individuals are accused of conspiracies, including criminal damage, threatening to kill, and theft; one person is charged with participation in organised crime groups.
  • They all are set to appear before Sunderland and South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court this week.

Wales Crime (Wales Times) September 22, 2026 – Five men have been charged over a disorder that saw a funeral hearse driven onto the pitch during a non-league fixture between Dunston UTC and Gateshead, prompting the abandonment of the match and triggering a wider police investigation into linked criminal activity.

Northumbria Police confirmed the charges on Tuesday, stating they followed a “long-spanning and complex investigation” into several connected incidents reported across the Dunston, Byker and Newcastle area during the summer of 2023. Detective Chief Inspector David Johnson said the force had treated the activity as linked from the outset and that “Operation Sentinel” – the regional response to serious and organised crime – had been used to coordinate the work alongside the Crown Prosecution Service.

“As ever, we would ask the public to refrain from any kind of speculation – both in the community and online – which could negatively impact the proceedings,” DCI Johnson added, according to reporting by The Sun. The BBC similarly quoted him urging people to avoid speculation that could adversely affect the legal process.

What occurred on the pitch at Dunston UTC?

As reported by multiple outlets including the BBC and The Sun, the incident took place on 21 July 2023 at Dunston Football Club’s ground on Wellington Road during a match between Dunston UTC and Gateshead. Footage circulated at the time showed a hearse and a silver Subaru entering the pitch, with the vehicles seen performing manoeuvres including donuts and drifting while posters or leaflets were thrown from the windows.

The hearse was subsequently abandoned on the field. With the score at 1-1 at half-time, the referee abandoned the match. According to the BBC, those inside the hearse distributed leaflets containing personal accusations against two individuals before leaving the scene in the Subaru. At the time, it was reported the stunt may have been a protest over the ownership of Dunston FC, though police have not detailed motive in their latest update.

Who are the five men charged?

Northumbria Police have named the five men and set out the specific charges each faces. As reported by the BBC and The Sun, the individuals are:

  • Carl Barron, 43, from Grange Villa, County Durham, accused of two counts of conspiracy to commit criminal damage, conspiracy to make threats to kill and conspiracy to steal.
  • Ian Boddy, 44, formerly of Bishop Auckland, County Durham, charged with conspiracy to steal and participating in the activities of an organised crime group.
  • Darren Kay, 31, from Chester-Le-Street, County Durham, accused of conspiracy to make threats to kill.
  • Graeme Rutherford, 54, from Birtley, Gateshead, charged with two counts of conspiracy to commit criminal damage and conspiracy to make threats to kill.
  • John Wright, 42, from Tow Law, County Durham, accused of two counts of conspiracy to commit criminal damage, conspiracy to make threats to kill and conspiracy to steal.

All five are due to appear at Sunderland and South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court on either Wednesday or Friday this week, according to Northumbria Police.

What is Operation Sentinel and how does it relate?

Operation Sentinel is Northumbria Police’s regional response to reports of serious and organised crime. In a statement quoted by The Sun, DCI Johnson said: “Operation Sentinel is our regional response to reports of serious and organised crime – and our teams have worked tirelessly alongside our colleagues from the Crown Prosecution Service to have now reached these charges.”

Police say the charges relate not only to the hearse incident but to a number of connected incidents over summer 2023, including reports of criminal damage across Dunston, Byker and Newcastle, and an account of a vehicle theft from the Durham area. The force has indicated it treated these as linked from the start, leading to the coordinated investigation now resulting in charges.

What do the charges mean in practical terms?

The men face a range of conspiracy offences, which in English law involve an agreement between two or more people to carry out a criminal act. The specific counts include conspiracy to commit criminal damage, conspiracy to make threats to kill and conspiracy to steal, with one defendant also charged with participating in the activities of an organised crime group.

These charges will now proceed through the magistrates’ court, with further procedural steps depending on how the cases are allocated and whether any are sent to the Crown Court for trial. As is standard, the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty, and the court process will determine the outcome of the allegations.

Background to the Dunston UTC hearse pitch incident

The hearse incident at Dunston UTC’s ground in July 2023 quickly became a notable story in local and national media due to the unusual nature of a funeral vehicle being driven onto a football pitch during a match. At the time, the abandonment of the game and the distribution of leaflets containing personal accusations generated significant local discussion, with some reports suggesting the action was connected to a dispute over the ownership of Dunston FC.

Northumbria Police subsequently opened a broader inquiry into related activity across the area, treating the hearse stunt as part of a series of linked incidents in summer 2023. That investigation, conducted under Operation Sentinel, has now led to the charges announced this week against five men, with the force emphasising the complexity and timespan of the work involved.

Prediction: how could this development affect local fans and clubs?

For local fans, non-league clubs and community teams in the North East, the charges and the underlying incident highlight the potential for off-field disputes to spill onto matchdays and disrupt fixtures. If the court process confirms organised elements behind the 2023 disorder, clubs may face increased pressure to strengthen matchday security, review access controls to pitches and working areas, and liaise more closely with police on intelligence-led planning for higher-risk games.

Supporters could see more visible stewarding and stricter enforcement of ground regulations, particularly at local derbies or matches where ownership or governance issues are sensitive. For Dunston UTC and neighbouring clubs, the outcome of the case may also influence how future protests or disputes are managed, with a clear expectation that any action threatening safety or abandoning fixtures will be treated as a serious criminal matter rather than a matter for the terraces alone.
