Court hears details of threats and axe incident

Prosecutor Nuhu Gobir told Cardiff Crown Court that on May 8 Holden threatened to kill a woman in Pantside with the intent that she would fear the threat would be carried out. According to reporting by WalesOnline, the neighbour opened her front door to find Holden nearby, visible through a gap in a fence, striking scaffolding with an axe. When she asked what he was doing, he said he “wanted to kill himself” and needed help, holding the axe to his own throat and claiming he had a “device” in his neck that needed removing.

As reported by WalesOnline, while the woman kept him talking and remained on the line with emergency services, Holden turned his attention towards her and said:

“I am going to slice your throat, I’m to kill, I going to you and p**s on you.”

He repeatedly asserted his intent to kill during the exchange. Police officers who arrived spoke with Holden, who appeared to be experiencing a mental health crisis, and he was subsequently detained under the Mental Health Act and taken to St Cadoc’s Hospital, where he was discharged at 5am the following day.

Fire at Lime Court property and calm demeanour

Two days later, on May 10 at about 2.20pm, the same neighbour heard loud banging coming from Holden’s home and, alarmed for her safety, called 999. Another resident observed significant black smoke coming from the property and also contacted emergency services. When the victim questioned Holden about the fire, he replied: “I wanted a fire so I lit one. I’d get out of your house if I were you,” before sitting on his front step smoking a cigarette as if “nothing had happened”, according to WalesOnline.

An investigation into the blaze determined it was started by a naked flame applied to paper or cardboard, causing approximately £5,000 worth of damage to the Caerphilly council-owned home on Lime Court. Upon police arrival, Holden was arrested and again referenced the “device” in his neck, claiming it controlled his speech.

Victim impact and prior convictions

In a personal victim statement read in court, the woman described experiencing “trauma, harassment, and intimidation” from Holden, which has adversely affected her mental health and that of her child. She said the incidents left her with anxiety, panic attacks and nightmares, and noted that Holden exhibited “no empathy or remorse”.

Holden, of Lime Court, pleaded guilty to arson with recklessness as to whether life was endangered and to making threats to kill. The court was told he has 21 prior convictions, including for battery and assaulting a police officer. During mitigation, Nick Gedge described Holden as a “troubled man” grappling with serious mental health issues.

Sentence and restraining order at Cardiff Crown Court

Judge Shomon Khan, sentencing at Cardiff Crown Court, said he believed Holden was more focused on harming himself than others, and suggested he should have been retained in hospital for longer. Even so, the judge imposed a custodial term, jailing Holden for two years and six months. In addition, an indefinite restraining order was granted to protect the victim.

Background to the development

The case forms part of a wider pattern of domestic and neighbourhood-related violence and arson offences dealt with by Cardiff Crown Court, where threats to kill and property damage often intersect with mental health crises and repeat offending. Holden’s history of 21 prior convictions, including violent and public-order offences, underlines the challenges faced by courts and mental health services in managing individuals with complex needs who live in close proximity to others. The sequence in May 2026 an axe-related confrontation followed swiftly by a deliberately lit fire in a residential area prompted emergency responses on two separate occasions and led to significant disruption for neighbours and local services.

Prediction: how this case may affect residents and local services

This development is likely to heighten concern among residents in Caerphilly neighbourhoods about safety when dealing with neighbours who display threatening behaviour or self-harm linked to property damage. For local housing providers and councils, the case may reinforce the need for clearer protocols on sharing risk information between mental health teams, police and housing officers when tenants exhibit repeated threatening or arson-related conduct.

For victims and witnesses, the indefinite restraining order and custodial sentence may provide a measure of reassurance, but the reported long-term anxiety and trauma suggest ongoing demand for support services. Over time, similar cases could influence how multi-agency risk assessments are conducted in south Wales, particularly where mental health episodes escalate into criminal damage and threats in residential settings.
