As reported by the County Times, the force said the equipment was taken from the service station on Friday morning, October 30, although its appeal specified that the theft occurred between 10pm and 10:26pm on that date. The discrepancy in the reported timing has not been explained further in the public appeal.

A spokesperson for Dyfed-Powys Police said:

“We are appealing for information following the theft of a Timberwolf, orange colour trailer chipper from Continental Service Station in Abercrave.”

The spokesperson added:

“The chipper was taken between 10pm and 10:26pm on the October 30.”

Police said they are seeking any information that might assist their investigation. No arrests, suspect descriptions, vehicle details, or recovery updates have been disclosed in the appeal published so far.

Why are police asking the public for help?

Dyfed-Powys Police have asked members of the public who may have seen the woodchipper, witnessed activity near the service station, or hold other relevant information to come forward.

The force said: “If you have any information that might help our investigation, please get in touch.”

According to the County Times report, people can contact Dyfed-Powys Police through its online reporting service, by emailing 101@dyfed-powys.police.uk, or by calling 101. Anyone providing information has been asked to quote the reference 26000893040.

The police force’s own rural crime reporting guidance says it accepts reports concerning stolen property, including vehicles, fuel, tools and GPS equipment. It also asks people reporting incidents to provide details such as the date and time, any witnesses or suspects, details of stolen items, and any available evidence.

What is known about the stolen woodchipper?

The item taken has been identified by police as a Timberwolf trailer chipper, coloured orange. Timberwolf is a manufacturer of woodchippers and other vegetation-management machinery commonly used in forestry, landscaping, grounds maintenance and tree-care work.

The police appeal does not state the model, serial number, estimated value, ownership details, or whether the machine was attached to a vehicle at the time it was taken. It also does not say whether CCTV footage has been recovered or whether any forensic enquiries have been carried out.

No further details about the circumstances of the theft have been released publicly. The force has not said whether it believes the theft was opportunistic or planned.

How have local media reported the case?

The appeal was reported by the County Times on November 3, 2026, in an article headlined “Police appeal after woodchipper stolen in Abercrave, Powys”. The report stated that officers were searching for the woodchipper and appealing for information about the incident.

Wales Farmer also carried the appeal, describing the stolen item as an orange Timberwolf woodchipper taken from Continental Service Station in Abercrave. Both reports attribute the core details to Dyfed-Powys Police.

The reports do not identify the owner of the woodchipper, the business operator, or any individual connected with the alleged theft. No court proceedings, charges, or arrests have been announced in connection with the incident.

What can people do if they have information?

Dyfed-Powys Police have set out three contact routes for anyone with information:

  • Use the force’s online reporting service.
  • Email 101@dyfed-powys.police.uk.
  • Call 101.

The force has asked callers and online reporters to quote reference 26000893040.

For emergencies, Dyfed-Powys Police guidance says people should call 999 if a crime is happening now or if there is immediate danger. For non-emergency concerns, the force directs people to its online reporting forms.

The force’s rural crime reporting page also notes that people who wish to report anonymously can contact Crimestoppers online or on its free helpline, 0800 555 111.

Background of the development

Dyfed-Powys Police covers a large rural policing area in mid and west Wales, where agricultural machinery, tools, vehicles and fuel can be targets for theft. The force’s published rural crime guidance specifically includes stolen property such as vehicles, fuel, tools and GPS equipment among matters that can be reported through its dedicated service.

The force has also published advice on heavy machinery theft prevention under its wider rural crime information.

In response to a freedom of information request published in March 2025, Dyfed-Powys Police disclosed that 68 items of machinery or tools were recorded as seized in relation to theft or burglary occurrences in 2023, rising to 85 in 2024. The same disclosure recorded seven items returned to owners in 2023 and 16 in 2024. The figures relate to seizures connected with theft or burglary occurrences and do not themselves establish how many thefts occurred or how many involved woodchippers.

The theft in Abercrave comes amid continued police emphasis on encouraging rural communities to report suspicious activity promptly. Dyfed-Powys Police says it can be difficult for people to know whether something amounts to a rural crime, but asks people to report concerns so officers can investigate further where necessary.

Prediction: What could this mean for rural businesses?

For farmers, contractors, landscapers and other rural businesses in Powys, the appeal is likely to reinforce the importance of securing machinery and reporting suspicious movements quickly. A trailer-mounted woodchipper is a portable, high-value item that can be moved by road, which means information from motorists, nearby residents and neighbouring businesses may be particularly useful to investigators.

If further information emerges, police may release additional descriptions of suspects, vehicles, or the direction of travel. Businesses in the area may also face greater pressure to review overnight security, lighting, CCTV coverage, immobilisers, trailer locks and record-keeping for serial numbers and photographs of equipment.

For the wider rural community, the case may increase awareness that even a single theft can disrupt work and create financial loss. However, based on the information currently released, it is not possible to say whether this incident forms part of a wider pattern or whether the woodchipper will be recovered. The most immediate practical effect is likely to be greater vigilance among local operators and continued police reliance on public information to progress the investigation.
